Government gets ripped by contractors
Heard this on the radio today (I seldom even have the TV on anymore) and thought I would interject my opinion. Stick around me very long and you will know I don't mind expressing my opinion in political type matters. Anyway according to the report, contractors have been double charging/overcharging/charging for services not rendered in the rebuilding following hurricanes Katrina and Rita last year along the Gulf coast. This report did not mention that the government had also been "conned" into paying for housing for the lowlifes who were too lazy to seek it on their own. They expect something given to them by their GOVERNMENT because of a NATURAL disaster. My uncle used to live in Ft Walton Beach FL and was there when hurricane (Opal I think it was) hit around 1995. He did not get any federal housing assistance. Noone he knew got any assistance of that kind. They just buckled down and rebuilt. Time after time hurricanes have hit Florida and time after time the PEOPLE rebuilt their homes and lives. They did not expect the government to do everything for them. If they heard a category 3 or higher storm was headed their way.....THEY LEFT. If I told you I was 6'9 and 320 lbs and was coming to crush your skull and there was little you could do to stop me....would you wait around?
Ok so I got a bit OFF topic there....the idiots in NO seem to do that to me. The contractors might be guilty of charging exorbitant fees and overcharging but how is that much different than GAS companies raising their prices on fuel they already paid for MONTHS ago in advance? I am not a business genius by any means but we all KNOW that the large gas companies and major outlets have paid a MUCH lower price fo the gas thats in the tanks now and for that matter what will be in the tanks for many months to come. Its called prebuying and it happens all the time. Not just in gas but pretty much anything. Ever hear of the commodities market? Pork belly futures? And what does our government do about it? They determine that no price gouging is taking place.....funny they cannot see it when a MAJOR contributor is the one in arrears but let a lowly small business man do the SAME thing basically then the government gets in an uproar and leaks a story to "shock"us into thinking these contractors are criminals. If the government was a bit more efficient they would have caught the double billing but we know government and efficiency are two terms that have opposite meanings. Don't condemn the contractors down there for doing the same thing the OIL and GAS companies are doing. I had a friend who did a lot of cleanup work on the ritzy Northshore part of NO on the other side of Ponchartrain and he told me of houses that were getting completely remodeled and perfectly good items being thrown away for no reason. He brought home many fridges and a lot of "scrap" high dollar wood flooring that our insurance companies had to replace for no reason....btw have you noticed the increase in insurace yet? Thats coming just get ready. He brought home one load of flooring that was some kind of Brazilian cherry wood that was valued at around $10000 he said and all it need was a light sanding and refinishing. Instead of insurance having to pay for a $1500-2000 refinish they had to REPLACE the wood at a cost of probably $15000+ with labor figured in. I know there will always be criminals at all stages of government but we can all DREAM of what it SHOULD be like right?

"English should be the only language taught or used in the public schools."
